Dates: January 21, February 4, 18.

Time: 5pm-7pm

This series of classes will lead you through knitting your first sweater using a pattern for a top-down pullover sweater.  We will begin by examining our swatches for gauge and discuss why this is important for garment knitting. We will also use our gauge swatches to learn the first two techniques needed- short rows (for shaping) and increases used to form a raglan sleeve before we cast on and get started.

The second class will lead you through separating the sleeves, and putting them on hold as well as resuming your knitting on the main body of the sweater.

The last class will focus on putting a sleeve back on your needles, picking up stitches under the arm, and demonstrate decreases used to shape the sleeve as well as the best way to use stitch markers on your sleeve. Because everyone knits at different speeds, you will be able to place the body of your sweater on hold in order to begin your first sleeve.

There will be two weeks between classes to allow knitting time!

Skills needed: must know how to knit, purl, and be comfortable knitting in the round and knitting from instructions.

Materials needed:

Yarn- DK weight yarn in the yardage needed for your size. First skein of yarn must be wound and ready to use prior to class.

Needles- Pattern specifies US 2.5 (3mm) either 16 inch (or 32-40 inch needle to magic loop) and US 6 (4mm) 32-40 inch needle. (If you would like to try magic loop, it is easily learned when starting your project in class.) Please be aware that you might need to change needle sizes depending on your personal knitting style— either larger if a very tight knitter or smaller if looser knitter.

Stitch markers- 8 markers for the increases and one distinct (not matching) BOR or Beginning of Round marker.

Pattern- included in class price and will be emailed to you prior to class.

Homework required prior to first class:

Knit a gauge swatch in stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) with larger needles (US 6) that is 30 stitches wide by 3 inches tall. LEAVE SWATCH ON NEEDLES, DO NOT BIND OFF. We will use this swatch both to confirm needle size, and also to learn our first techniques.

Class fees are non-refundable. Store credit will be provided if canceled at least 24 hours before the scheduled class.
